Or maybe Scouting is completely new to your family. It doesn’t matter, you’re bound to have questions. So to all you parents – welcome – and here are the answers to the most common ones.

We’re including some key information on where we meet, joining Scouts, costs, uniforms, badges and more.

If you have a question that’s not answered here, please get in touch.

  • Where do we meet?

Most of our meetings are held at the Ashby Hastings Scout Hut on Wilfred Gardens, Ashby de la Zouch, LE65 2GX.

During the better weather, we will often meet at nearby Willesley Scout Campsite.

Occasional hikes or bike rides may have different start or finish locations, you’ll be given the details in advance.

  • What day and time?

    Squirrels : Wednesdays - 16:30 - 17:30

    Beavers : Mondays - 17:15 - 18:15

    Cubs:  Mondays - 18:30 - 20:00

    Scouts: Wednesdays - 19:30 - 21:00

  • I'd like my child(ren) to join - what now?

Please fill in the joining form & we’ll be in touch.  We operate a “want to join” list for those not yet old enough, and if your child is old enough & we don’t have any spaces immediately, then we’ll pop them on a waiting list.

If you’re moving in to the Ashby area and your child has been part of Scouts elsewhere, then do let us know so we can welcome them as soon as possible.

  • How much does it cost ?

We charge subs of £45 each term. This covers the general weekly meetings, badges earned and other assorted costs.  We split this in to 3 payments of £15 across 3 months.

There is a £5 investiture fee when your child joins the group and makes their promise after the first few weeks. This covers the cost of the necker which they’ll keep all the way through their time with us, and the initial badges. You’ll need to buy their uniform.

Camps and trips are paid for separately. We try to keep these as reasonable as we can.

If you’re experiencing any financial difficulties, please have a confidential word with the Treasurer, the section leader or the Group Scout Leader as we do have a hardship fund available.

  • What about uniform ?

Squirrels wear a red Squirrel jumper.

Beavers wear a turquoise Beaver jumper.

Cubs wear a green Cub jumper. For most meetings at the hut and formal occasions, then school or Scout trousers and school shoes are needed.

Scouts wear a Scout shirt. School or Scout trousers and school shoes as for Cubs.

You can buy these at the Leicestershire County Scout Shop or online.

We sell optional red Ashby Hastings T shirts from £5. These are suitable for informal occasions, camps, hot weather – and makes everyone very easy to spot if we’re at large events! These are sized from the smallest Squirrel to the largest leader!

  • Where do all the badges go?

Four different types of boy scout uniforms are shown on a white background.

The membership badge goes on the left chest, along with joining in and moving on badges.  “Occasional” badges also go here.

The nametape, district and county badges go on the right sleeve.

Challenge badges and Chief Scout Awards are placed on the right chest.

  • Which badges do I have to move from Squirrel to Beaver to Cub to Scout uniforms?

You will need to transfer the general badges which are not specific to the section your child is leaving onto their new uniform:

    Purple membership badge

    Joining in

    Nametape, district & county badges

    Chief Scout’s Award

Staged activity badges (the round blue ones with a small number on the bottom)

Any occasional badges, such as the Ashby Hastings anniversary badge

You can sew your child’s section activity and challenge badges onto a camp blanket, and occasional badges after the period they are allowed for.

  • How can I help?

Please get in touch & we’ll happily chat about what you’d like to offer and how you can be part of our team.

  • What about fundraising ?

As a charity, we operate on a not-for-profit basis.  That said, we have premises to maintain and have a good supply of equipment that needs to be maintained and replaced periodically.

We’re looking to improve the hut significantly over the next 12-18 months, so any offers of assistance in whatever way, are welcome.
